Friends of Belgrave Rail Trail (established 2015)

The Belgrave Rail Trail extends from Tecoma Railway Station to Blacksmith’s Way near Belgrave Station. The trail is an important corridor for both wildlife and people: it is home to over 20 bird species and is used daily by hundreds of local residents walking to schools, shops, trains and work and is a popular weekend destination for Melburnians and other tourists. During recent COVID-19 lockdowns, the Trail was a lifeline for local families who could enjoy its great beauty on their doorstep.

The main focus of the Friends group is to enhance biodiversity and regenerate native bushland along the Trail. Ongoing activities are the removal of invasive weed species such as English Ivy and Panic Veldt grass, and replanting the Trail with locally sourced indigenous plants. We are also passionate about community education and engagement.

All these activities are supported by the Southern Dandenongs Landcare Group and the Shire of Yarra Ranges Environmental Volunteers Network.
